I’ve noticed in the past few weeks a lot of issues with viruses, virus software, people sending each other viruses etc. It seems to be a pretty nasty trend as a general whole. Just a few months ago we had a nice worm on our servers and actually had to shut them all down run Avast and then start them all back up to get rid of it…very nast thing. If we tried shutting down one at a time, the worm just jumped servers, so we wound up spending most of our nights and weekends for about 3 weeks trying to catch this bugger. Fortunately we did finally get rid of it.
I am a very firm believer in Avast. Honestly, while it does slow down computers, I would reccomend it for any major viruses. It is the only virus program that I know of that actually doesn’t allow Windows to start up and runs the scanner through DOS thereby not allowing the virus (or viruses) to start running and embed themselves. Now as a daily scanner, I do use it personally, but I wouldn’t reccomend it for everyone since it does slow your overall computer down significantly.
Believe it or not I’ve actually run into worms that will embed themselves so deeply into Windows (I’m actually not sure how these guys managed to get them, but thats an entirely different story) that it wouldn’t allow you to open the CD drive much less open any programs or even try and format the harddrive. The worm had actually embedded itself in the Bios! I was shocked to say the least when my client called and told me about this worm. Fortunately after a few hours of arguing with it we were able to get rid of it, but honestly that’s one of the worst ones I’ve ever personally seen.
Not to mention the ones where my friends get them from ex’s or ex-friends. Some of those can be pretty nasty as well (since most are hand coded for that particular person). This is the one case where I wouldn’t suggest Avast. Honestly, just format the harddrive and block the person from e-mail or any other places you may have contact with them. Its just not worth getting into a virus war with them…
If you have any questions or comments feel free to post them! Thanks for reading!
